NYC's private school admissions season will be here before you know it! While it may officially still be summer, some schools open their applications as early as August. Here are just a few of the things you can do now to prepare, ensuring that your fall is as stress-free as possible.
Parent Statements
Almost all school applications require a parent statement, and sometimes it’s not just one, but multiple questions about your child and their educational experience. Admissions directors read through hundreds of these a season, so start early by drafting ideas for how to write yours to set your child apart, and really make their personality pop off the page. Don’t just list the typical adjectives like smart, kind and curious. Back them up by including lots of details and personal anecdotes!
Interviews
Both parents and children interview in the NYC private school admissions process. You may get 15 minutes, you may get 45, but either way, you have to make your time count. When you work with an admissions advisor like The Admissions Plan we help students and parents begin practicing their interviewing skills long before they actually step foot into a school, or on Zoom. You always want to make sure you and your child are presenting yourselves in the best light possible and practice makes perfect!
Test Preparation
Last year many schools were still test optional due to the pandemic, while others required the ISEE or the SSAT as part a student’s application. You may want to start checking out school websites now to determine which schools will be requiring the test. Usually schools will post their new admissions policies by July. Don’t have your child wait too long to prepare, or they will be cramming at the last minute. The Admissions Plan can help your child by sharing our amazing roster of test prep tutors we recommend to our families!
Admissions Support
Many families don't know where to begin whether it's finding the right school for their child, or just managing all the required tasks that are part of the application process. Educational consultants like us here at The Admissions Plan can help support you through the process. From helping you craft a targeted list of schools that are the right fit to keeping you organized and meeting deadlines throughout the entire season, we are here to make sure your child ends up in the right place for your family.
These are just some of the things to think about when preparing this summer for what’s to come! Interested in learning more? Call us at The Admissions Plan to find out how we can help you navigate the NYC private school admissions process.
